Google has announced a major performance update for its web-based spreadsheet application, Google Sheets. The update includes doubling the calculation speed in the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers, which will significantly improve data processing in Sheets. The Google Sheets team worked with the Chrome browser team to optimize the calculation speed using a new web technology called WasmGC (WebAssembly Garbage Collection). In addition to speed improvements, Google is also working on reducing initial loading times, improving copy/paste and filter performance in Sheets.
Google also introduced new features to enhance the Sheets experience. Gemini for Workspace will now be available in Sheets through a new side panel, allowing users to easily summarize, analyze, and generate content by accessing all other content like email and documents. Pre-designed tables have been added to help users quickly start a spreadsheet without starting from scratch, with pre-built tables available for scenarios like project management, event planning, inventory management, and more. The new tables feature includes improved layouts with column types, filters, color coding, drop-down menus, and more, making data entry more streamlined. Conditional notifications allow users to set up custom rules to receive email alerts when specific criteria are met, providing enhanced communication within the spreadsheet.
These updates aim to make Google Sheets more efficient and user-friendly, enabling faster data processing and easier content creation. The performance improvements and new features are designed to enhance the overall Sheets experience for users.
