Macquarie Dictionary names “AI Slop” as the 2025 word of the year

The Macquarie Dictionary has announced that “AI Slop” has been selected by its committee and voted by the public as the 2025 Word of the Year.

According to Macquarie, AI slop refers to low-quality content created by generative AI, often contains errors and is not requested by the user.

“What we understand now, in 2025, is slop, AI-generated slop that lacks any meaningful content or utility,” Macquarie’s committee said.

Macquarie said the public had joined the committee for the second year in a row.

“While in recent years we have learned to become search engineers to find meaningful information, we now need to become fast engineers to navigate the AI ​​quandary,” the committee said.

“In this sense, slop will be a solid addition to English in the years to come.”
