Apple’s upcoming macOS Sequoia is set to introduce new features that will not be supported on Intel-based Macs. While the operating system is said to be compatible with the same Macs as macOS Sonoma, certain advanced features will only work on machines with Apple’s M1 chip or later. Intel Mac owners can expect to miss out on features such as Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features tailored for Apple devices, and live audio transcription within the Notes app.
Apple Intelligence utilizes generative AI to enhance user experience, but this feature will be exclusive to Macs with the M1 chip or later. Live audio transcription in the Notes app, which allows users to record and generate live audio transcripts, will also only be supported on Apple Silicon-powered machines. However, Intel Mac users can still enjoy other new features in macOS Sequoia, including the ability to schedule messages, integration between Reminders and Calendars, a standalone Passwords app, window tiling, and more. Additionally, iPhone Mirroring under Apple’s Continuity feature will work on Intel-based Macs with a T2 security chip.
For those wondering if their Mac model is compatible with macOS Sequoia, the list includes MacBook Air (2020 and later), MacBook Pro (2018 and later), iMac (2019 and later), Mac Mini (2018 and later), iMac Pro (2017 and later), Mac Pro (2019 and later), and Mac Studio (2022 and later). Users can verify their Mac model by clicking on the Apple logo in the menu bar and selecting About This Mac.
Currently in developer beta, macOS Sequoia is expected to have a public beta release later this month, with a full release planned for the fall. Users with Intel-based Macs should take note of the features that will not be available to them in the upcoming operating system.
