Recent changes in the central senior management of the AWS Greater China Region have been reported. Liang Yan, who was the head of the Major Accounts department responsible for 13 major customers, has resigned from his position and moved to the Microsoft Azure Enterprise Customer Department as a Business Business Leader. This move places him within the team led by Yuan Yituo, who is the vice president of Microsoft China and the general manager of the enterprise commercial business division. In addition, sources familiar with the matter have revealed that before leaving his position, Liang Yan signed a large GPU order with ByteDance.
Following Liang Yan’s resignation, the Senior Account department has been handed over to Gu Fan, who was previously in charge of the Strategic Business Development Department. The announcement of these personnel changes was made by AWS Greater China’s number one position, Rui Song, via an internal email.
The industry experts have expressed surprise at these changes, especially given the critical moment AWS China is facing with the potential loss of customers amid competition and economic challenges. Many of AWS China’s revenue comes from the 13 major customers managed by Liang Yan, and the impact of his departure on internal morale and customer trust is a concern.
It is noted that Microsoft Azure has been actively poaching employees and customers from AWS China, with Liang Yan being the latest addition to the list. The restructuring of the AWS China team under Chu Ruisong’s leadership involved the separation of the 13 major customers into a new Main Account Department, which was under Liang Yan’s supervision.
The KPI set for Liang Yan in 2024 is reportedly lower than average, indicating a decline in growth expectations from major customers. The appointment of Gu Fan, who has taken over Liang Yan’s position, has also raised eyebrows among industry experts, as he is known for his previous work at Intel and his internal trajectory within AWS.
As AWS China faces challenges in meeting its financial targets and maintaining market share, the pressure is mounting on the senior management team to deliver results and navigate through the competitive landscape in the region. The shift in leadership and the potential impact on key customers and business operations remain areas of concern for AWS China as it moves forward in a challenging environment.
