The RPG mechanics in the Pokémon series have always had an odd balance. The core system of any type of Pokémon, with strengths and weaknesses, is usually solid, but it’s the areas around that base that seem to change from game to game. Leveling up your Pokémon is one of those areas. Originally, leveling up a Pokémon was as easy as using it enough times in battle to get enough XP to level up, but when we met Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl, things have gotten a little more complex.
Leveling up your team is much easier in some ways, but also more difficult. Right from the start, all of your Pokémon will benefit from the full XP portion, which means that even the pocket monsters you sit on the bench will still earn XP as if they were in combat themselves. However, if you get new Pokémon late in the game and after the game, when more Pokémon become available, you may end up leaving dozens of levels behind with not many obvious ways to earn good XP. Don’t worry, there are a few ways you can quickly improve your team Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl to reduce the grind.
If you’re still progressing in history, the first great place to go to grind battles much faster is when you go to Iron Island. This will happen in about the middle of your adventure Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl, but you only have one chance to take advantage of this situation. The first time you go to Iron Island, which you trigger by speaking to the sailor at the Canalave City docks, Riley will join you as a partner until you reach the goal of defeating the Galactic Grunts on that island .
Grinding with Riley at this point has two main advantages. First, any Pokémon you encounter in the wild will automatically become a double battle since you have a partner. This effectively doubles your XP gain as you get XP from both Pokémon you defeated. The real kicker is that Riley will also fully heal your team’s HP and PP after every single fight if you just talk to her. That means after a few fights, you won’t have to run back to a Pokémon center to recover. You can grind and grind to your heart’s content.
Fighting wild Pokémon is fine, but we all know that trainers are the real XP gains. But coaches will mostly only challenge you once. However, with a handy item called Vs. Seeker, you can challenge any trainer you’ve already defeated. and they will even have a more powerful roster than the first time. That means even the early game coaches are worth going back and battling for a nice bit of XP a second time.
The vs. Seeker is a key item, meaning you will automatically pick it up during the game, especially on Route 207. When you use it, any trainer currently on your screen who can be re-fought will get two exclamation marks above their head . Remember, the Vs. Seeker has a recharge mechanic that you can’t use until you’ve walked 100 steps after using it before.
The only exceptions that the Vs. Seeker doesn’t work when trainers are in caves or buildings. This includes the trainers on Victory Road so you can’t double up on those high payout battles.
There are many different hold items that you can give your Pokémon to add different buffs and effects, but the only thing to worry about when trying to level up quickly is the rare Lucky Egg. This item increases the amount of XP you earn in each battle by 1.5 times. Obviously, you won’t stumble upon a Lucky Egg, but there are a few ways you can snag one. Just know that Lucky Eggs’ XP multiplier is stackable. That is, the more you have and the more Pokémon you have, the higher this multiplier will be, up to a maximum of six for your active list.
The first place you can find a lucky egg is in the Grand Underground. To the far northwest of the map is an area called Acuity Lakefront. Here, look for the Poké Ball in the middle of the ice room, which contains a free lucky egg.
Lucky Eggs are also a win for Loto ID in Jubilife City. This is luck dependent, so not a very reliable method. More consistently, you can buy them with your BP in the Battle Tower, but at a very high price of 77 BP.
Finally, and this is also somewhat coincidental, the occasional lucky egg if you run into Chancey and steal one of them. You can do this using either the Thief Skill, but if none of your Pokémon know this move, you can just catch the Chancey. If it happens to hold a Lucky Egg when you catch it, you can take it and give it to another Pokémon.
Again, trainers are some of the most lucrative sources of XP in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shiny Pearl, and some of the strongest coaches in the game are none other than the Elite Four. These are essentially the top-level enemies that you can fight repeatedly before facing endgame challenges like the Battle Tower. These trainers will have very high level Pokémon that give tons of XP and are the only special trainers you can actually encounter multiple times, even without the Vs. Seekers. In fact, there are two versions of the Elite Four that you can compete again.
Once you’ve defeated the Elite Four, you can fight them again by simply entering the Pokémon League and walking through the main entrance as you normally would. This will put you up against the exact same line-up as when you first met. When you’re ready for a tougher battle and higher XP payout, you’ll get a new lineup of Pokémon as soon as you receive the National Pokédex.
If you’re in the grand underground anyway, hideaways are your best bet for battling wild Pokémon that are worth your time by the end of the game. This is because the Pokémon that appear specifically in hideaways are adapted to your level. Also, you can see which Pokémon are nearby to fight. In general, look for more evolved Pokémon for more XP. Some good hideaways are the Bigblugg Cavern, Glacial Cavern, and Fountainspring Cave.
After all, there is always rare candy. This rare item does exactly what it always has and instantly increases the level of each Pokémon by one. These are best saved until your Pokémon are on the later stages that need more XP to reach them. There are a limited number of these powerful items in the game, but if you are really desperate there are some methods people have found that you can use to duplicate rare candies.
