Earlier this month a unannounced pair of Beats wireless earbuds, apparently called Beats Studio Buds, appeared in beta versions of iOS and tvOS. While these betas were a good start, a spate of new leaks – including recent photos of superstar athlete LeBron James’ mysterious earbuds – suggests they could be available very soon.
Here’s what we already knew: On May 17th, people studying the betas for iOS and tvOS 14.6 found clues about the new headphones, with perhaps the clearest glimpse of them coming from animations in the operating system shared by MacRumors Contributor Steve Moser (he’s got a whole thread of them here):
This week the Beats Studio Buds appeared under this name in FCC Submissions, a sign that the product has been approved for sale in the United States. Diagrams in these Submissions Also, give us a clear look at the shape of the buds from a certain angle.
photos published by MySmartPrice This week shows devices that are very similar in design to these FCC charts – although it looks like these new photos are just the plastic case for the earbuds. While MySmartPrice said it “couldn’t independently verify the authenticity of these images,” the design appears to be consistent with other leaks.
Now, Wednesday night, we may have got our first look at the earbuds in the wild in the ears of LeBron James who posted new photos on Instagram where it appears to be bearing the buds (above MacRumors). At first glance, it’s hard to tell which headphones he’s wearing, but when you look Really Nearby, you can see a square ridge on the outside of the headphones that looks very similar to the headphones in the animation shared by Moser.
LeBron sure knows what he’s doing. At this point, the Beats Studio Buds seem like the real deal and they could be arriving any moment. Now all we need is Apple to announce it.
