BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — Thousands of layoffs at a company called Oracle are raising questions about the future of work as the tech giant cuts jobs while investing billions in artificial intelligence.
Oracle is the latest company to be linked to mass layoffs. This is part of a growing trend of companies investing money in AI. However, human resources strategy expert Marcus Mossberger says AI is not the real reason people are losing their jobs.
“AI is just being used as an excuse. It’s not the root cause. That’s why they’re prioritizing AI investments over their employees,” Mossberger said.
According to Mossberger, this moment is more about business decisions than technology. He believes companies like Oracle should do more to retain workers by retraining and redeploying their skills rather than laying them off.
“It’s just a lack of planning, a lack of clarity and, again, an underinvestment in what I would call workforce development,” Mossberger said.
