Oracle’s recent mass layoffs have caused a stir not only because of the extent of the job cuts, but also because of the severance packages offered to employees. Several former employees have now told how they found out about the loss of their jobs and why some of them tried to defend themselves against the company’s policies, it said Techcrunch.

As has been widely reported, Oracle has laid off an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 employees in a March 31 email. One affected employee told TechCrunch that he only realized something was wrong after he couldn’t access the company VPN. The employee said he had a strange feeling when the VPN indicated that the user no longer existed. After checking with a colleague and learning that his Slack account had also been deactivated, the employee later received an email informing him that his role had been terminated immediately.
