KPMG partner fined for using artificial intelligence to cheat on AI training test

A partner at consulting firm KPMG has been fined for cheating using artificial intelligence during an internal artificial intelligence training course.

The unnamed partner was fined 10,000 Australian dollars (£5,200) for using the technology to cheat. He was reportedly one of several employees who used this tactic.

More than two dozen KPMG Australia employees have been caught using AI tools to cheat on internal audits since July, the company said, increasing concerns about AI-powered cheating in accounting firms.

According to the Australian Finance Review, which first reported it, the advisory firm used its own AI detection tools to uncover the fraud.

The four major accounting firms have struggled with fraud scandals in recent years. In 2021, KPMG Australia was fined A$615,000 for “widespread” misconduct after more than 1,100 partners were found to be involved in the “improper sharing of answers” to tests assessing skills and integrity.
