The software company that was hit by a ransomware attack over a holiday weekend said it compromised between 800 and 1,500 small businesses managed by its customers.

However, Kaseya says the cyberattack he witnessed over the July 4th holiday weekend was never a threat and had no impact on critical infrastructure.

The Dublin-based company announced Tuesday that it was made aware of a possible attack by internal and external sources on July 2. It immediately blocked access to the software in question. About 50 Kaseya customers were affected by the incident.

Many of Kaseya’s customers are managed service providers who use Kaseya’s technology to manage IT infrastructure for local and small businesses with fewer than 30 employees, such as dental offices, small accounting offices, and local restaurants. Of the approximately 800,000 to 1,000,000 local and small businesses managed by Kaseya’s customers, only about 800 to 1,500 have been compromised.

The hacked Kaseya tool, VSA, remotely manages customer networks and automates security and other software updates. President Joe Biden said Saturday that he had ordered a “deep dive” into the attack from US intelligence and that the US would react if it found the Kremlin involved.

The company said it is working with various government agencies including the FBI, CISA, the Department of Homeland Security and the White House, as well as computer incident response company FireEye Mandiant IR on the incident.
