The Summer Gaming Brouhaha is officially upon us. To as of last week, this week we move to the Summer Game Fest and its accompanying conga series of smaller shows. This will eventually culminate in the Xbox Showcase on Sunday. The Summer Game Fest that kicked off yesterday featured some fun game reveals, but . . . Well, you might have noticed a pattern. I definitely have.
For who knows what reason, the Summer Game Fest was absolute lousy with space-based sci-fi horror titles. These include Aliens: The Dark Descent, The Callisto Protocol, Fort Solis, and routine. Apparently several game developers collectively became nostalgic for Dead Space/Alien Isolation/System Shock a few years ago. In the non-space horror realm, we also saw the reveal of layers of fearsthe Bloober team’s new project – not exactly the remake of Silent Hill 2 that everyone thought they were working on, but oh well.
We also checked out The Last of Us remake, which is properly titled The Last of Us Part 1. The details of the game were accidentally revealed ahead of the big show, but we also got some comparison shots between the two titles. The environments and lighting look like they’ve received a modest but nice upgrade. As for the character models, I’m not sure the remake is really an upgrade. We also saw titles like Goat Simulator 3who enjoyed a trailer parodying that of Dead Island 2 with development hell. I also enjoyed watching it Marvel’s Midnight Sunand between him and Gotham Knights, October will be a celebration for comic book fans.
I’ve spent some time playing with Boss Factory, the demo for the upcoming Saints Row. Announced at Summer Game Fest, it will allow players to test out the customization features and build their bosses ahead of the game’s August 23 launch. You can see the results above: I managed to make myself with some respect for reality because I wanted to personally bully the people of Santo Ileso. It’s a great customization tool, but of course only a small part of the whole game. I’m also playing the demo for the upcoming one Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopesbut I’ll keep my thoughts on that to myself for now.
