AI is the most consequential technology we will ever develop. Japan’s industry-friendly Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to Australia this week was an opportunity to combine our efforts with those of a natural friend in an area that will determine which countries forge a secure and prosperous future and which creep into this new era.
Takaichi and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed an economic security agreement in which they pledged to “look for ways to further promote concrete cooperation” on technologies such as AI. It was a promising development. Now the government should take advantage of this opportunity, as long as Japan is willing to do so. We can only win by aligning ourselves with a regional neighbor whose strategic orientation is closest to Australia’s of any Asian country and which has proven that it can move technological and industrial mountains if it puts its mind to it.
AI is dangerously dominated by two technology superpowers, the United States and China.
