Australia is far from a world leader in developing confident AI capabilities. Our federal investments are paltry compared to the billions pledged by other middle powers such as Canada, France and Singapore. But even if we missed the first wave of fundamental model development, the AI flood doesn’t have to pass us by completely.
This begins with the government creating a difficult balancing act. Labor needs to show the world’s largest artificial intelligence companies that Australia is open for business, while showing the community it has learned from the social media era to get a fair share of the ongoing benefits.
