For Patrizia Schlosser, it started with an apologetic call from a colleague. “I’m sorry, but I found this. Are you aware of this?” He sent her a link that took her to a website called Mr DeepFakes. There she found fake pictures of herself naked, squatting, chained, having sex with various animals. They were tagged “Patrizia Schlosser, slutty FUNK whore” (sic).
“They were very graphic, very humiliating,” says Schlosser, a German journalist for Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and Funk. “They were also very poorly made, which made it easier to distance myself and convince myself that they were obviously fake. But it was very unsettling to imagine that someone somewhere had spent hours searching for pictures of me on the Internet and put it all together.”
