A British government official added a new crease to the UK investigation into Nvidia’s proposed $ 40 billion acquisition of Arm by ordering the agency to investigate the national security impact of the buyout.
The UK’s competition and market regulator, which is examining mergers and acquisitions for reasons of non-compete and monopoly, launched an investigation into the effects of the agreement on competition in January. On Monday, the British Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport instructed the CMA to examine the national security component. The policy allegedly came about because the deal would transfer ownership of Arm, a crown jewel in the UK’s high-tech portfolio, to a foreign-owned (in this case American) company. The secretary asked the CMA, whose role is similar to that of the US Federal Trade Commission, to report its findings by July 30th.
