When James Cameron’s vision of a warlike world of Terminators first flickered onto movie screens in 1984, the end of civilization was brought about by a fraudulent computer system called Skynet. It reflected global fears of the Cold War, technological dependency and the growing role of computers, but was largely relegated to the world of Hollywood make-believe.
