IQM Quantum Computers and Hewlett Packard Enterprise recently announced a collaboration at the ISC High Performance 2024 conference in Hamburg. They showcased a joint demonstration of the integration of quantum computing and high-performance computing (HPC). The collaboration sets the stage for future integrated offerings between the two companies.

The demonstration highlighted a hybrid solution combining classical and quantum hardware running integration software to fully leverage quantum computing capabilities alongside classical HPC capabilities. Quantum computing is expected to play a crucial role in the future of high-performance computing, with significant progress made despite being in its early stages of development. This technology has the potential to solve problems that traditional supercomputers alone may struggle with.

IQM has been leading initiatives in providing turnkey hardware solutions for HPC center deployment and preparing HPC centers to be quantum-ready. In Germany, IQM will integrate a quantum system into an HPC supercomputer at the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ), one of Germany’s national supercomputing centers.

Dr. Peter Eder, head of strategic partnerships at IQM Quantum Computers, emphasized the potential benefits of integrating quantum computing and HPC resources to maximize computational power. The joint demonstration with HPE showcased the technical expertise of both companies and highlighted the advantages of leveraging the strengths of both technologies.

Kirk Bresniker, Vice President and Chief Architect of Hewlett Packard Labs at HPE, noted that the collaboration has demonstrated the readiness of hybrid quantum/classical platforms for HPC center users. These platforms enable users to explore, create, and test advanced algorithms, develop internal resource capabilities, and generate intellectual property.

While hardware and algorithm development in quantum computing and HPC have made significant progress, engineering efforts to improve the integration of these technologies have lagged behind. Closing this integration gap is essential for developing hybrid quantum/classical solutions, and ongoing efforts in this area will inform future product co-developments between IQM and HPE.
