Apple surprised many of us with the introduction of the iPhone 12 mini as the fourth variant of its traditional flagship handsets in addition to the standard iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Will there be an iPhone 13 mini alongside the one in 2021? iPhone 13? Nothing is certain yet, but here we take a look at all the previous leaks and rumors surrounding the smaller iPhone.
Apple has not released an official breakdown of its iPhone 12 series sales, but has released several reports from Consumer Intelligence Research Partner suggested that the iPhone 12 mini is the least popular model. In fact, it appears to be by far the least popular.
According to these numbers, the iPhone 12 mini accounted for less than 5% of total iPhone sales from December 2020 to March 2021. The iPhone 12 was about 20%, and the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max were both just behind.
Exact sales figures are likely never to be released directly by Apple, but the general consensus is that the iPhone 12 mini wasn’t a big sales driver for Apple. Does that mean we won’t see an iPhone 13 mini? The rumors currently suggest that we will.
Lots of leaks
There are leaks from an iPhone 13 mini, and we keep hearing details about a smaller model when we hear about the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
For example, this week we heard about battery capacity from one source. It was said that we will see increased battery capacity on each model, and details for the iPhone 13 mini were also revealed.
This does not guarantee that an iPhone 13 mini will happen, but often if a smartphone was canceled during the production phase, we would no longer hear about it in rumors and leaks.
September is the expected release date of the iPhone 13, and while it may be a while longer, that’s when Apple traditionally has plans to complete and start making the new phones.
Screens are made
The display production for the iPhone 13 series is running, at least that’s how it is heavily rumored from another report that came out at the end of May.
If that’s true, Apple is producing smartphone screens for the iPhone 13 mini, and that’s our surefire sign yet that it’ll make a smaller version of its next flagship lineup.
Again, this is leaked and rumored information, but it’s a big sign that we’ll see a smaller alternative phone from Apple in the future.
There’s no guarantee Apple will make an iPhone 13 mini, but it currently looks more likely that we’ll see a new smaller option from the company in 2021.
The poor iPhone 12 mini sales could have a bigger impact on future generations than anything the company does in 2021.
Smartphone makers often work on devices years in advance, and it may well be that the iPhone 13 series is so well planned that it actually has more of an impact on the iPhone 14.
However, Apple should also be satisfied with the sales performance of the iPhone 12 mini. It is very unlikely that we will ever hear Tim Cook or any of his staff speak about it publicly, but it may well be that the expectations for this device were not very high.
If it did, this is just an additional option that sits alongside the main line of smartphones, and it could be that Apple always expected this when the smartphones came out.
September is likely the iPhone 13 mini release date if it’s supposed to happen, and we’ll have to wait and see what the company has in store by then.
