Shares of IonQ advanced after the company said it was deploying its Superion 256 quantum computer at the Nvidia Accelerated Quantum Research Center.
Shares were up 4.9% at $42.73 as of midday Wednesday. The stock is down 4.8% this year.
The quantum computing company said the link-up between the quantum computer and an Nvidia GB200 NVL72 system will allow researchers to develop hybrid software for quantum and classical computers and prototype hybrid systems. The quantum computer is expected to be installed next year.
The two companies will also jointly research applications for quantum computing in portfolio optimization and risk modeling, materials science and drug discovery.
“We see this as the beginning of an exciting era of hybrid quantum-classical computing,” said IonQ Chief Executive Niccolo de Masi. “This era will be unlocked by multiple generations of Superion systems and Nvidia’s industry-leading AI platforms.”
IonQ introduced the sixth generation of its Superion quantum computing platform earlier this month, and said orders are available now with deliveries expected next year.
The company on Tuesday said it had developed and successfully tested a real-time quantum error correction decoder, addressing a key obstacle in the quantum computing field. That announcement also sent shares higher.
