Microsoft Azure has introduced a new SKU called Azure Bastion Developer to provide secure and cost-effective connectivity to Azure virtual machines. This service, now in public preview, aims to simplify and enhance the process of accessing Azure virtual machines by eliminating complexities, high costs, and security issues associated with alternative methods.

Azure Bastion Developer is a low-cost, no-configuration, always-on service that offers secure default Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and Secure Shell (SSH) access to Azure virtual machines. It aims to address common issues developers face when connecting to Azure VMs, including discovery, usability, and cost.

This new SKU will appear as the recommended connectivity option in the virtual machine connection experience for available regions, making it easier for developers to establish secure connections. Azure Bastion Developer simplifies the setup process by offering an easy-to-use, zero-configuration solution, eliminating the need for complex and time-consuming steps.

One key benefit of Azure Bastion Developer is its affordability compared to other options, making it an attractive choice for developers with limited budgets. By providing a cost-effective private connectivity option in Azure, developers can enjoy secure access without overspending.

Azure Bastion Developer supports portal-based access for RDP connections for Windows VMs and SSH connections for Linux VMs in the Azure portal. The service will also offer native client-based SSH access via the Azure command line interface (CLI) in the future.

Compared to other SKUs of the Azure Bastion service, Azure Bastion Developer is a lightweight option designed for development/test users who want secure connectivity without additional features or scaling. The feature matrix shows the differences between Azure Bastion Developer and the Basic and Standard SKUs.

To start using Azure Bastion Developer, users can navigate to the Azure portal, deploy a Windows or Linux VM in specific regions where the service is available, and click Deploy Bastion Developer on the Virtual Machine blade. Once deployed, users can securely connect to their VMs in the browser.

Overall, Azure Bastion Developer aims to simplify secure access to Azure virtual machines for developers, addressing common pain points and offering a more affordable option for private connectivity. By trying out Azure Bastion Developer, developers can experience improved convenience and security in their Azure development workflow.
