A Chinese intern’s surprise win at an Nvidia tech event has triggered a workplace standoff, a legal gray area, and a viral online reckoning over employee rights.
Earlier this month, a Shanghai-based intern was sent on a company-sponsored trip to Suzhou for an Nvidia roadshow. But after winning a RTX 5060 graphics card in a raffle, what should have been a moment of good fortune quickly spiraled into a company conflict.
The intern refused to hand over the prize, the company claimed ownership, and within days, he had resigned. The story has since exploded on Chinese social media platforms and global tech outlets, resonating well beyond its modest price tag—approximately ¥3000 (~$420).
A Lucky Draw Becomes a Resignation Letter
On November 14, the intern, who remains unnamed, attended a Nvidia promotional event in Suzhou as part of a company assignment. According to Tom’s Hardware, the event included a raffle for participants who completed a stamp-collecting challenge across various booths. The intern entered during downtime and won a new RTX 5060 GPU, a soon-to-launch mid-tier graphics card from Nvidia.
After returning to Shanghai, the intern was told by a coworker that the company’s finance department considered the GPU corporate property. The rationale: he had been traveling on business, with expenses covered by the employer.
