Intel has announced that its next-generation processors, codenamed Lunar Lake, will be launching with OEM devices in the third quarter of 2024. This launch is set to coincide with new laptops that boast AI PC Certification for the Christmas season. The processors are expected to outperform the previous generation, Meteor Lake, with a focus on AI and improved performance.

The Lunar Lake chips will feature an improved 45+ TOPS NPU, along with Intel’s ‘Battlemage’ GPU as part of the XPU system-on-a-chip. Details on the new performance (P-Cores) and efficiency (E-Cores) will be revealed later in the month, as well as information on the Arrow Lake desktop processors at Computex in June.

Intel is already mass producing wafers for the Lunar Lake chips and plans to launch devices from more than 20 OEMs in the third quarter of 2024. The company is optimistic about the capabilities of Lunar Lake and its ability to deliver Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences at scale.

The processors are expected to offer breakthrough power efficiency and support for x86-64 architecture, providing a competitive offering in Intel’s history. The new cores and GPU in Lunar Lake, such as Xe2 Battlemage cores and the Intel GPU, promise to drive visual-focused AI acceleration with a 60 TOPS rating.

In testing, Lunar Lake has shown improved power consumption and performance compared to previous-generation processors from AMD and Qualcomm. Intel is confident in its ability to deliver the fastest AI acceleration by the second half of 2024, as well as a 50% gain in GPU performance.

Overall, Intel is positioning Lunar Lake as a powerful player in the traditional x86-64 architecture category, aiming to bring AI computing to millions of PCs by 2025. The company faces tough competition from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform but is optimistic about the appeal of Lunar Lake in the market. Further details about the processors and their performance will be revealed in the coming months, highlighting Intel’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology to consumers.
