Intel to bring cutting-edge AI technology to revolutionize Paris Olympics 2024

Intel is incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the upcoming Paris Olympics in an effort to enhance the experience for both athletes and spectators. While the use of AI-powered competitions may be a future possibility, the focus of the 2024 Paris Olympics will remain on showcasing human athleticism. The event is scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 10, featuring athletes from 200 countries competing in various sports.

Intel’s AI technology will interact with athletes, curate video highlights, and even suggest ideal sports for attendees based on their preferences. Sarah Vickers, the director of Intel’s Olympic and Paralympic Games Office, is leading a team of over 100 Intel employees in Paris to develop and implement the company’s AI strategy for the Olympics. Unlike past initiatives such as drone technology for synchronized flight shows, Intel’s efforts for the 2024 Paris Olympics will have specific strategic priorities.

One key aspect of Intel’s AI integration is the development of a conversational robot, or chatbot, that can interact with users and answer complex questions. The chatbot is designed with safeguards to filter out questions without answers and flag them for further investigation. While there are no immediate plans to make the chatbot available to the general public, Intel may explore ways to showcase it to a wider audience.

Intel’s AI technology aims to revolutionize how Olympic event footage is curated and presented to viewers and producers. Through AI-based auto-tagging and real-time highlight creation, Intel’s platform will enable quicker generation of highlights for less-watched sports, providing broader coverage and supporting smaller countries with limited broadcast resources. This innovation could simplify the process of creating videos of the best moments of each region, ultimately enhancing the coverage of the games.

In collaboration with Samsung, Intel has introduced an AI-powered talent identification system that uses Samsung smartphones and tablets with computer vision capabilities to observe athletes during specific sports-related exercises. The results are then analysed on Intel’s cloud-based AI platform to determine each participant’s suitability for specific Olympic sports. This initiative was piloted in Senegal to identify potential athletes for the next Youth Olympic Games in 2026, showcasing the versatility and accessibility of the technology.

Overall, Intel’s integration of AI into the 2024 Paris Olympics represents a significant step towards enhancing the overall experience for athletes and spectators. By leveraging AI technology for video highlights, athlete identification, and user interactions, Intel aims to revolutionize the way the Olympics are experienced and viewed.
