Intel has recently unveiled details about its upcoming Lunar Lake processors, which are designed for laptops and are set to be launched in the third quarter of the year. These processors are based on the chiplet design seen in the previous Meteor Lake models. The new Lunar Lake processors will feature improved performance cores (P cores) called Lion Cove and efficiency cores (E cores) known as Skymont. Additionally, enhancements have been made to the Thread Director technology, which optimizes core management for better performance.

One notable upgrade in Lunar Lake is the integrated graphics processing unit (GPU) with Xe2 architecture, incorporating elements of the upcoming Battlemage technology. This advanced GPU design is expected to deliver up to a 50% performance boost compared to previous models. Standalone video cards based on the Battlemage technology will be released later.

The Neural Processing Unit (NPU) integrated within Lunar Lake has also seen improvements, with its AI processing capacity increasing from 10 tera operations per second (Tops) in Meteor Lake to 45 Tops. When combined with the GPU’s 60 Tops, the chip’s total AI computing power surpasses 100 Tops. Furthermore, Intel is expected to reveal more details about the integration of LPDDR5 memory, replacing traditional DRAM soldered on motherboards, at the upcoming Computex event.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is scheduled to provide a more in-depth look at Lunar Lake during his keynote speech at Computex on June 4. This presentation is anticipated to cover the introduction of the next generation of desktop CPUs, Arrow Lake. Arrow Lake will bring the latest Meteor Lake innovations to desktop form factors, including tile-based architecture, new manufacturing techniques, and updated CPU core designs.
