Intel releases recommended voltage settings for 13th and 14th-gen CPUs experiencing crashes.

Intel releases recommended voltage settings for 13th and 14th-gen CPUs experiencing crashes.

Users of recent high-end Intel processors have been experiencing crashes while running games and other intensive programs for the past few weeks. Intel has not yet provided a definitive solution to the issue but has offered some guidance on mitigating factors, particularly related to clock reduction. Users affected by the problem are advised to check with their motherboard manufacturer for software updates regularly.

Intel has published a detailed table of recommended BIOS settings for CPU users impacted by the recent bugs. Those facing problems should set the parameters listed in the table as their BIOS defaults whenever possible. It is recommended to use Intel’s default settings instead of the higher frequency defaults that some motherboard vendors may preinstall. Users are encouraged to compare the recommended settings from Intel with those from their motherboard vendors.

Asus released a firmware update in April that includes the new Intel Baseline Profile (IBP) for a more conservative power delivery approach. However, Intel advises against using IBP for K-tier processors, though it should be suitable for i9 KS users. The chip manufacturer recommends utilizing the “Performance” or “Extreme” power delivery profile depending on the CPU. It is important to note that not all motherboards support these configurations, so users should refer to their motherboard vendors’ websites for guidance on power delivery profiles and other recommended settings to address recent instability issues.

There have been reports of ongoing crashes affecting the 13th and 14th generation i7 and i9 K, KF, and KS processors over the past few weeks. The crashes frequently occur during the compilation of shaders for high-end games, some of which run on Unreal Engine 5. Other programs like CineBench and Handbrake have also led to similar crashes.

Epic, Nvidia, and various motherboard manufacturers have pointed towards Intel as they continue to investigate the root cause of the issue. While the new recommended BIOS settings may not resolve the problem for everyone, Intel has identified excessive voltages as a contributing factor.

Intel and other vendors are expected to release a new BIOS update that addresses a voltage-related bug responsible for the crashes. While the update may not provide a definitive solution, it should enhance the Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost algorithm. Users are advised to monitor Intel and their motherboard vendor’s support pages for updates until the issue is fully resolved.
