Intel is discontinuing its Optane-branded products, with most solid-state drives already phased out. However, some Optane products are still available for purchase and will remain on the market for a while. The company recently announced that its Optane Persistent Memory 200 series modules for servers will be end-of-lifed, but customers can still acquire them until 2025. Intel customers are advised to assess their needs for the Optane Persistent Memory 200 Series modules and place final orders by December 31, 2024, with the products set to be shipped by December 31, 2025.
These Optane persistent memory modules in the 200 series are utilized with Intel’s third-generation Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake) processors to expand memory capacity economically, alongside DDR4 memory modules. While the 200 series DIMMs will be phased out, Intel will continue to ship its Optane Persistent Memory 300 series modules compatible with the 4th Gen Xeon Scalable ‘Sapphire Rapids’ processors, designed to be used with DDR5 memory. These 300 series modules were launched in the first quarter of 2023 and are expected to be available for at least two more years, assuming there is enough 3DXPoint memory available to produce these DIMMs.
Intel made the decision to discontinue its Optane business in mid-2022 as part of a broader strategy to focus on profitable and strategically important ventures. The company has since scrapped equipment worth $559 million and neither Intel nor its development partner Micron are actively producing 3D XPoint memory. As a result, there will be no new Optane-based products released. The question now is how long Intel will be able to continue shipping existing Optane-branded products to its customers.
In conclusion, Intel is phasing out its Optane-branded products, with the majority of solid-state drives already discontinued and the remaining products set to be available for purchase until 2025. Customers are advised to place final orders for Optane Persistent Memory 200 Series modules by December 31, 2024. While the 200 series modules will be discontinued, Intel will continue to ship its Optane Persistent Memory 300 series modules compatible with newer processors for at least the next two years. The decision to end the Optane business was part of Intel’s focus on more profitable ventures, indicating a shift in the company’s strategic priorities. With no new Optane-based products in production, the longevity of existing Optane-branded products being shipped to customers remains uncertain.
