Intel has decided to discontinue the Core i9-12900KS processor, which was once the flagship model in their desktop lineup. This processor, with 16 cores and a max frequency of 5.5 GHz, has been overshadowed by newer models like the Core i7-13700K and the Core i9-13900K, which offer similar specs at higher frequencies. The shift away from the 14nm era is evident with the introduction of Intel’s Core i9 KS series, featuring 24 cores and speeds up to 6.0 GHz.
The Core i9-12900KS will no longer be produced by Intel after approximately two years and three months since its launch. While it will still be available for a limited time, Intel plans to stop supply in January 2025 and cease full production by July 2025. Along with the Core i9-12900KS, Intel is also discontinuing its 10th Gen Core series, including various SKUs from entry-level Pentium Gold to Core i5 processors.
The impact of this discontinuation on sales is expected to be minimal, as the market has shifted its focus to newer processors like the 12th Gen Alder Lake and AMD Ryzen series. In markets like South Korea, the 10th Gen Core series only accounted for 1% of sales.
By discontinuing the remaining 10th Gen processors, along with the previously eliminated 11th Gen Rocket Lake series, Intel is marking the end of their 14nm desktop processor era. This move reflects the company’s commitment to advancing technology and catering to the constantly evolving market demands.
