Intel confirms upcoming release of Lunar Lake in Q3 2024 and Arrow Lake in Q4 2024

Intel has shared new information about its upcoming Lunar Lake CPU architecture, which will compete with Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon processor. Alongside the Lunar Lake announcement, Intel also revealed that Arrow Lake, part of the Core Ultra 200 series for mobile and desktop platforms, will be available in the fourth quarter of 2024. More details about Arrow Lake are expected to be unveiled at Computex.

Intel’s marketing presentation for Lunar Lake coincides with Qualcomm’s reveal of the Snapdragon X series and Microsoft’s new Copilot+ PCs for AI. Intel’s marketing materials directly compare its CPUs to Qualcomm’s, emphasizing significant performance enhancements. Lunar Lake is projected to offer 1.4x better AI performance in Stable Diffusion 1.5 compared to the Snapdragon AMD Ryzen 7 8840U and the Snapdragon X Elite.

Lunar Lake will feature new core architectures: Lion Cove (P-Core) and Skymont (E-Core). It will include an “Advanced Low Power Island” and a new NPU unit capable of reaching +45 TOPS. Combined with the Xe2 GPU’s claimed +60 TOPS AI performance, Intel estimates Lunar Lake chips could reach up to +100 TOPS.

The Intel Core Ultra 200V series is designed for lightweight laptops, mini PCs, and possibly portable gaming devices. On the other hand, the more powerful Arrow Lake series, which shares the same CPU core architectures but utilizes an older Xe-LPG (Alchemist) GPU architecture, will be used in high-end laptops and desktops.

KitGuru raises questions about whether Intel’s Lunar Lake CPUs will surpass the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X series SoCs at comparable prices, and if the additional AI performance potential is significant to consumers.
