In a summer internship program sponsored by Intel, thirty college students and five high school students are currently receiving hands-on training in the semiconductor career field at Wright State University. The program aims to prepare students for careers in the semiconductor industry, particularly in light of Intel’s plans to build two chip production plants near Columbus and hire thousands of workers in the coming years.
Collaborating with Central State University, Wright State University is providing training in microelectronics design, clean room operations, circuit board design, and additive manufacturing to equip students for roles at Intel and other semiconductor companies. Assistant Professor Fathi Imsaad emphasized the importance of training Ohioans for this industry to enhance national security, especially in light of chip shortages experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Imsaad emphasized the need for the United States to be self-sufficient in chip production to avoid dependence on foreign manufacturers. Students in the program will also learn how to ensure the safety and reliability of chips from other countries used by American businesses and consumers, protecting them from potential security threats.
The students participating in the internship will reside on campus until July and will each receive a $5,000 stipend. Imsaad mentioned that one of the program’s goals is to attract women and underrepresented groups to the semiconductor industry. This initiative aims to diversify the workforce in this field and provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive in the semiconductor sector.
