Intel assures new gaming CPU range is on schedule for holiday season 2024

Intel has revealed details about its upcoming new CPUs. The Arrow Lake desktop gaming CPUs are expected to arrive in the final quarter of this year, with the Lunar Lake mobile chips set to launch even earlier, in the third trimester of 2024. This means that consumers may have access to their next Intel processor in time for the holiday season.

These announcements set the stage for an intense competition in the gaming CPU market, as AMD is also expected to release new Zen 5 CPUs around the same time. Intel made these statements ahead of its Tech Tour event, which coincided with the release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X laptop CPU announcement. Lunar Lake is positioned as a direct competitor to Qualcomm’s Arm-based laptop CPU chip, with Intel touting it as the most power-efficient x86 CPU chip to date.

X86 is the instruction set used by traditional desktop PC CPUs from AMD and Intel, while Qualcomm’s Arm architecture utilizes a different instruction set that is not widely supported by Windows or most PC games. Qualcomm’s approach involves converting x86 instructions on-the-fly to work on its Arm chip architecture, similar to Apple’s success with its Arm-based CPUs. This presents a significant challenge to AMD and Intel in the mobile PC space due to the efficient power performance of Arm processors.

In terms of mainstream gaming desktop PCs, consumers will soon have to choose between AMD Zen 5 and Intel Arrow Lake, with both architectures expected to be announced at the Computex trade fair. However, while there may be a reveal at Computex, the actual availability of products for purchase will still be a few months away.

In the meantime, consumers in the market for a gaming CPU upgrade may want to consider the AMD Ryzen 7 7800 X3D or the Intel Core i5 14600K, depending on whether they are buying a new system (AMD) or upgrading an older Intel motherboard to the latest Intel silicon.
