Guy Curtis’ defense of Professor Pat Ellis and her use of AI is spot on (Letters, June 5). Ellis’ original article highlights a misunderstanding between using AI to fully generate written content (generative AI) and using it to organize ideas, research aspects of a topic, and make suggestions about structure, etc. (assistive AI). The HeraldNine Publishing’s AI Guidelines page states that editorial staff may use assistive AI “to conduct initial research, stimulate ideas, analyze data, suggest headlines or summaries of key points.” This is a good strategy that leverages technology to increase productivity. The mistake Ellis may have made was not explaining that she used assistive AI to create the article. The use of AI should be encouraged due to the enormous benefits it offers. But it needs to be properly regulated to manage the very high risks…
