IMSA, the International Motor Sports Association, teamed up with AWS to provide real-time car telemetry to fans during races. The GTP car, with a hybrid powertrain, was introduced in 2023 and is the newest, fastest class in IMSA racing. AWS Kinesis Data Streams, Fargate, and AppSync are used to process and deliver the telemetry data from over 180 sensors on each GTP car to fans around the world.

During the Rolex 24, 6.5 million messages were processed in less than a second, providing fans with engaging insights into the car’s performance. The live telemetry dashboard, accessible on mobile devices and websites, had over 28,000 page views from 11,500 unique users from 106 countries during the race. The data was also integrated into TV and radio broadcasts, enriching the commentary and engaging fans further.

This collaboration between IMSA and AWS was executed in less than four months, showcasing the ease with which AWS services and existing workflows can work together. As the 2024 season approaches, updates and enhancements to the telemetry solution are anticipated, including data from additional sources and deeper insights related to sustainability. The momentum is expected to continue with more advancements in the future. Fans can look forward to staying connected and engaged in the exciting world of motorsports.
