If you don’t do this, Google Maps will erase your location history

Google Maps users are familiar with the Timeline feature that saves their location history. However, in December 2023, Google announced a shift in how this data is stored. Previously saved on Google accounts in the cloud, location history will now be stored on the user’s device for increased privacy. This change comes alongside a decision to delete all location history saved in Google accounts starting June 9, 2024. Users who wish to retain this data must transfer it to their smartphone or tablet.

To notify users of this change, Google has sent out emails detailing the new policy regarding Google Maps Timeline. The email states that after June 9, 2024, users will not be able to access their location history on any platform other than their device, including the web. While this information was initially only displayed in the Google Maps app, the email serves as a proper announcement to ensure all users are aware of the update.

Recognizing the need for users to transfer their location history in a timely manner, Google has extended the deadline to December 1, 2024. To successfully transfer timeline data from their Google account to their device, users must have the latest version of the Google Maps app installed. This means users have five months to update the app and transfer their data to their device if they wish to keep their location history on Google Maps.

At present, the new Timeline policy seems to be limited to the United States, with users in countries like India not receiving any emails regarding the change. However, it is likely that Google will eventually extend the policy to users in other regions worldwide. Users are encouraged to stay informed and keep an eye out for any further announcements regarding the Timeline feature in Google Maps.
