Snort 2 is finished. On October 21, 2026, Cisco Talos declared every open-source Snort 2 release end of life and stopped writing rules for it, according to Mallory’s report on the Snort 2 end-of-support notice. That turns the old IDS vs IPS debate into a live deadline for any team still running 2.9.x sensors.
