IBM announced at the annual IBM Think conference that it is collaborating with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to make the full range of IBM Watsonx offerings available on the Watsonx data and AI platform for use with AWS services. This partnership aims to simplify the scaling of AI across organizations through an open hybrid approach with comprehensive governance measures in place.
The integration of IBM Watsonx.governance and Amazon SageMaker will assist customers in managing model risk and meeting compliance obligations in light of new regulatory requirements, such as the EU AI Law. This move complements the existing availability of the Watsonx platform in AWS Marketplace, including Watsonx.ai and Watsonx.data as customer-managed offerings.
Ritika Gunnar, General Manager of Product Management, Data and AI at IBM, emphasized the importance of IBM’s open AI and hybrid cloud strategy in enabling businesses to leverage AI with their trusted data across various technologies and locations. The collaboration with AWS will provide customers with flexibility, scalability, and seamless integration with other AWS services.
The Watsonx.governance and Amazon SageMaker integration is set to launch in June, offering customers the ability to streamline workflows, accelerate AI initiatives, and manage AI in complex IT environments. Users can establish customized model approval and risk assessment workflows across multiple stakeholders, ensuring compliance and providing an audit trail within both Watsonx and Amazon SageMaker.
Industry experts, such as Chris Konow, CEO of CleanSlate Technology Group, and Adi Paz, CEO of GigaSpaces Technologies, have praised the collaboration between IBM and AWS for addressing critical governance and regulatory concerns in generative AI projects. IBM’s Watsonx.data is also made available on AWS, making it easier for customers to access, visualize, and transform data for generative AI workloads.
In addition to the Watsonx platform, IBM offers various software products and consulting services on AWS Marketplace in over 90 countries. This includes a consumption-based license for Amazon RDS for Db2, simplifying workload management and enabling faster cloud provisioning with on-demand licenses.
Ankur Mehrotra, General Manager of Amazon SageMaker on AWS, highlighted the collaboration’s focus on empowering businesses to effectively leverage generative AI solutions while ensuring responsible governance. The partnership aims to drive workflow improvements and deliver greater value to customers by combining the strengths of Amazon SageMaker and Watsonx.governance.
IBM Research utilizes an on-premises and cloud-hosted infrastructure, including Amazon SageMaker HyperPod, to train its IBM Granite series of large language models efficiently. IBM Consulting, in partnership with AWS, aims to expand its Generative AI expertise to help joint customers implement responsible AI frameworks and comply with regulatory requirements.
