IBM has released the IBM Storage Ceph version 7.1, allowing customers to explore new use cases supported by IBM. This distribution of the open source Ceph platform offers scalable object, block, and file storage in one solution. Launched in January 2023, IBM Storage Ceph runs on standard x86 server hardware, starting with four nodes and expanding to petabytes as needed.

The new IBM Storage Ceph 7.1 introduces features such as fast network-based block storage for VMware, allowing NVMe/TCP access to Ceph block storage for VMware vSphere. NFS support for CephFS enables file system access for non-native clients, and updates to Ceph Object Storage, RADOS Gateway include support for S3-compatible platforms and cloud transfers. IBM Storage Ceph now includes Intel QAT acceleration for enhanced performance and efficiency.

The release also includes multi-site object replication, NFS access with RADOS Gateway backend, and an object archive zone for protecting against security threats. The IBM Storage Ceph Dashboard has been updated with improved administrative insights and features for user interaction. Hardware monitoring capabilities provide detailed information on cluster server health, firmware versions, and more.

Additionally, IBM is offering Technology Preview features for early testing and feedback, including Ceph volume management, performance monitoring with VMware vCenter, and Ceph block volume lifecycle operations for VMware 7 Update 3 and later. These features are not fully supported for production but offer a glimpse into future capabilities.

Overall, IBM Storage Ceph version 7.1 enhances storage flexibility, efficiency, and security for IBM customers, providing a comprehensive solution for a variety of storage needs.
