IBM has spent the past several weeks assembling a quantum-computing ecosystem that stretches from a Swiss research campus to a wafer fab in upstate New York — a build-out that management is funding through both private capital and federal money. The company finalized a $1 billion award with the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act on Wednesday, with the funds routed through its Anderon unit. The money is earmarked for research and development at IBM’s 300-millimeter quantum chip manufacturing facility in Albany, New York. IBM is matching that sum with another $1 billion of its own.
The confirmation of government backing did not lift the shares. According to media reports, some market participants used the news as an opportunity to lock in gains. By Friday’s close, IBM stock had shed 2.5% to settle at EUR 201.90, extending its year-to-date decline to 22%.
