IBM has announced that they will be releasing a family of artificial intelligence models as open source software and will assist Saudi Arabia in training an AI system in Arabic. This move is part of IBM’s strategy to make money by providing open access to AI models rather than charging for access like some of their competitors.
The company’s “Granite” family of AI models is now open for companies to customize, providing tools to help software developers complete computer code faster. IBM also offers a paid tool called Watsonx to help run customized models seamlessly within a data center.
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that they believe they are in the early days of generative AI models and that competition is beneficial for buyers. Additionally, IBM has partnered with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority to train the “ALLaM” Arabic language model using Watsonx, adding new language skills to IBM’s offerings.
Overall, IBM’s approach to making money with AI involves focusing on providing value to customers by enabling them to use AI models, regardless of whether they come from IBM or other sources, and whether they run in IBM data centers or not. This strategy aims to promote competition and innovation in the AI space.
