IBM releases additional AI models as open source and secures a new contract in Saudi Arabia, reports Reuters.

IBM announced that it will be releasing a family of artificial intelligence models as open-source software and will be assisting Saudi Arabia in training an AI system in Arabic. This decision sets IBM apart from competitors like Microsoft, who typically tightly protect their AI models and charge for access. Instead, IBM is making the models themselves accessible and has introduced the “Granite” family of AI models for customization by companies.

The Granite tools are specifically designed to help software developers write computer code more efficiently. IBM offers a paid tool called Watsonx to help run these customized models seamlessly within a data center, allowing the company to make money when customers utilize AI models, regardless of their source or where they are run.

CEO Arvind Krishna highlighted IBM’s belief in the early stages of generative AI models and emphasized the importance of competition in driving innovation while also prioritizing safety and responsibility. In addition to releasing its open-source models, IBM has partnered with the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority to train the “ALLaM” Arabic language model using Watsonx. This collaboration will enhance IBM’s language capabilities, including the ability to understand various Arabic dialects.

Overall, IBM’s approach to AI differs from its competitors by focusing on providing open access to AI models and generating revenue through the use of these models rather than charging for access. By offering open-source models and collaborating with organizations like the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, IBM aims to contribute to the advancement of AI technology while also expanding its language capabilities.
