IBM Japan head Yamaguchi to lead business lobby Keizai Doyukai

TOKYO (Kyodo) — IBM Japan President Akio Yamaguchi will assume the leadership of a major Japanese business lobby, the group said Tuesday, following the resignation of former Suntory Holdings Chairman Takeshi Niinami after a police probe.

Yamaguchi, 61, is one of the vice chairpersons of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, known as Keizai Doyukai. He will take leadership on Jan. 1.

The position has been vacant since Niinami, 66, stepped down on Sept. 30 after he was investigated by police over his purchase of certain supplements, while he has denied any wrongdoing.

The membership of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives comprises around 1,700 top executives of corporations. It formulates proposals on political, economic and social issues.

The members join the body’s activities as individuals, not as representatives of their company or a specific industry, unlike the Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, the country’s most powerful business lobby where major…
