IBM executive says AI skill in high demand, can earn over 0,000 annually and applicable across industries

Executives are keen on hiring individuals with AI skills, as 96% feel the need to integrate AI into their business operations. Despite this, over two-thirds of desktop workers have never used AI, as per a March 2024 study by the Slack Workforce Lab Survey of over 10,000 professionals. Lydia Logan, VP of global education and workforce development at IBM, warns that those who do not learn AI skills risk missing out on career opportunities, with generative AI anticipated to impact over 300 million jobs worldwide according to Goldman Sachs estimates.

Logan emphasizes the importance of rapid engineering as a crucial AI skill in high demand. She explains that providing accurate and detailed prompts to generative AI tools is essential for effective use, as inadequate input leads to poor output. To enhance prompt engineering skills, individuals can start with basic online tutorials or practice using tools like Chat GPT or Microsoft Copilot. Logan notes that regardless of career stage, anyone can benefit from learning to use AI effectively, especially those with a high school degree or less, as employers in the AI sector prioritize skills over degrees.

A recent IBM survey of 3,000 CEOs from various industries and countries revealed that four in 10 CEOs plan to hire additional staff due to generative AI. New roles such as rapid engineers and AI product managers are emerging, emphasizing technical and soft skills rather than bachelor’s degrees. While AI professionals are sought after in all sectors, the most urgent demand is in technology, retail, finance, healthcare, and education, with many roles offering six-figure salaries. Jobs requiring generative AI skills have an average potential salary of $174,727 per year, highlighting the lucrative opportunities in the field.

Logan encourages individuals to sharpen their rapid engineering skills, emphasizing it as a versatile entry-level skill that can open doors to various opportunities.
