IBM Enhances Personalized Fan Engagement at Wimbledon Through Use of Generative AI

IBM has introduced a new feature called ‘Catch Me Up’ on wimbledon.com and the Wimbledon 2024 app. This feature offers personalized pre- and post-match player cards with AI-generated stories and analysis. The player cards will be tailored to user preferences, focusing on favorite players and providing recent performance analysis and win predictions before matches, as well as key statistics and highlights after matches. Additionally, users will receive longer daily recaps of the day’s play.

According to Jonathan Adashek, senior vice president of marketing and communications at IBM, the ‘Catch Me Up’ feature showcases the power of generative AI in delivering compelling storytelling at scale. IBM has been collaborating with Wimbledon for 35 years to enhance fan experiences through technologies like generative AI. The new feature is designed to cater to the needs of new and existing tennis fans worldwide, delivering timely and curated coverage of women’s and men’s singles matches, even when they occur simultaneously.

Chris Clements, digital product leader at the All England Club, expressed their commitment to providing fans with the highest quality Wimbledon experience, whether in person or digitally. The use of generative AI enables Wimbledon to offer personalized content to fans globally, facilitating their engagement with key stories throughout the Championship. In addition to the ‘Catch Me Up’ feature, Wimbledon will leverage AI to cover a broader range of matches, including wheelchair events, through the redesigned IBM Slamtracker on the Wimbledon app and wimbledon.com.

IBM’s research, in collaboration with Morning Consult, shows that a majority of global tennis fans believe AI will have a positive impact on sports. Fans prioritize real-time updates, personalized content, and unique insights in enhancing their sports viewing experience. Furthermore, fans use multiple devices while watching matches to access more information and engage with other fans. The ‘Catch Me Up’ feature aims to meet these expectations by providing advanced digital experiences and bringing fans closer to their favorite players.

Ria Pinto, general manager and technology lead at IBM South Africa, emphasized that the ‘Catch Me Up’ feature, powered by IBM’s Granite LLM through the watsonx platform, will elevate fan participation in this year’s Wimbledon tournament. By leveraging generative AI, the feature will offer an immersive experience to all Wimbledon fans, allowing them to stay connected with the latest updates and insights related to their favorite players.
