IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has dismissed the narrative that the current layoffs across the tech industry are primarily due to the artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Arvind Krishna, who began his career at IBM in 1990 before rising to eventually be named CEO in 2020 and chairman in 2021, attributed the current tech layoffs to over-hiring during the pandemic and called it a “natural correction”. In an interview with The Verge, Arvind Krishna acknowledged that AI will lead to some job displacement, but also said that multiple companies are currently laying off staff because they overhired between 2020 and 2023.
“But I also think that some of this is happening right now because if you look at the total employment numbers, I think people gorged on employment. I used that phrase during the pandemic and the year after.
