IBM and The All England Lawn Tennis Club have announced a new feature for the Wimbledon digital experience that utilizes generative AI from IBM’s data and AI platform, watsonx, to provide fans with real-time updates on the top players during the championship. The ‘Catch Me Up’ feature will display personalized player cards with AI-generated stories and analysis before and after matches. This new feature aims to enhance the content available to tennis fans and offer more timely and curated coverage of the matches.
The AI model, Granite Large Language Model, was trained on Wimbledon’s editorial style and will be closely monitored by the All England Club. The feature will deliver pre-match analysis, win probability predictions, and post-match statistics and highlights. Additionally, generative AI will be used to provide coverage of a wider range of matches, including wheelchair events, to cater to Wimbledon’s diverse international audience.
A recent study by IBM and Morning Consult showed that the majority of tennis fans in the UAE believe technology will have a positive impact on fan engagement, coaching, game strategy, training, and talent identification in the sport. The research also revealed that sports fans in the UAE tend to use multiple devices simultaneously to consume sports content, with a significant portion using two devices at the same time while watching sports.
Jonathan Adashek, senior vice president of marketing and communications at IBM, highlighted the importance of using generative AI to create compelling storytelling in sports and emphasized the positive impact of technology on enhancing digital experiences for fans. The collaboration between IBM and Wimbledon continues to evolve, leveraging AI technologies to provide innovative solutions for fans across various industries.
The new ‘Catch Me Up’ feature is just one example of how AI technologies are being utilized to engage fans and deliver personalized content during major sporting events like Wimbledon. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see more innovative applications of AI in sports and other industries, enhancing the overall fan experience and driving new possibilities for engagement.
