IBM and Pasqal, leaders in superconducting circuits and neutral atom-based quantum computers, have announced a partnership to develop quantum-focused supercomputing and advance research in chemistry and materials science. The collaboration aims to integrate quantum computing with classical computing to create the next generation of supercomputers. This partnership will define a software integration architecture for a quantum supercomputer that orchestrates computational workflows across multiple quantum computers and classical computing clusters, based on open-source software. IBM and Pasqal plan to co-sponsor an HPC technical forum in Germany and expand this effort to other regions.

The partnership between IBM and Pasqal will focus on fostering industrial adoption in materials science and chemistry, with a goal of advancing quantum computing applications in these areas. By leveraging their leadership roles in full-stack quantum computing, the two companies will work with the Materials working group established by IBM to explore methods for creating workflows for utility-scale computing in chemistry using a hybrid of quantum and classical computing.

IBM Fellow Jay Gambetta expressed excitement for the potential of quantum supercomputing in scientific applications and highlighted the collaboration with Pasqal as a step towards an open and hardware-independent future for quantum computing. Pasqal CEO Georges-Olivier Reymond emphasized the collaboration as an important milestone in the industry, aiming to establish best practices for quantum supercomputing and meet the growing demands of customers.
