Palo Alto Networks has announced the acquisition of IBM QRadar Software-as-a-Service Intellectual Property Rights and Assets as part of a partnership to enhance AI-driven cybersecurity in the enterprise market. This move will make Palo Alto Networks IBM’s preferred cybersecurity partner across various areas, including network, cloud, and security operations centers. Additionally, Palo Alto Networks will integrate Watson’s large language models into its Cortex XSIAM platform to enhance its offerings.
The deal signifies a significant step for Palo Alto Networks, a key player in providing threat protection to enterprises. Last year, the company introduced free incident response services to retain existing clients and attract new ones. However, their revenue growth forecast caused the company’s shares to decline in February. Rival companies also started taking competitive actions to retain customers.
The partnership will assist in migrating QRadar SaaS customers to Palo Alto Networks’ Cortex platform. Analysts view this collaboration as a response by IBM to falling behind in the security sector as organizations transition from on-premise security to cloud-based solutions. IBM was perceived to lack innovation in recent years, leading to the launch of new security offerings such as QRadar Log Insights and QRadar SIEM SaaS.
The deal underscores two key trends in the security landscape. Firstly, organizations require assistance with implementing and maintaining security products due to a shortage of security skills. Secondly, there is a demand for security operations solutions that are easier to manage and more integrated across the entire security product portfolio. Palo Alto’s XSIAM solution aims to reduce the workload of security personnel through enhanced integration compared to traditional SIEM tools like QRadar.
Furthermore, the companies will collaborate on a joint security operations center and establish a joint cybersecurity field. IBM plans to train over 1,000 security consultants on implementing Palo Alto Networks products, with its consulting division becoming the preferred managed security services provider for Palo Alto Networks customers. The deal is set to be finalized by the end of September.
