Every writer I know despairs at the prospect of being replaced by AI. Many of them say that they basically never use it; I know this is the case for everyone.

That’s why this week I’m conducting the forbidden experiment in front of everyone as part of my AI diary. As a creative writer, I’m on par with ChatGPT. Can it really suit me and could it replace me? Let’s clear this up.

We wrestle with writing prompts randomly selected from an excellent new guide called A Year of Creative Thinking by Jessica Swale. On the first page I turn to, we are inventing new words for existing things. It’s a lot of fun. A cheese grater, I think, could definitely be described as a “stinkzizzle”. A very long path would be more suitable as a “slodge puff”. A fart becomes “nonsense” and a dream becomes “amazing.” I’m happy with that. But how does the machine work?

For cheese grater it has scraper grater, which is obviously crap. Very long way? Neverendipath. Something literal. Trumpelsnort is pretty good, as well…
