Chinese smartphone company Huawei today announced its newest foldable smartphone, the Mate X2 special event in china.
The successor to 2019’s Mate X.The phone has been radically redesigned to include a large, uninterrupted 8-inch screen that folds inward instead of the main display on the outside like the original device.
The main screen uses a 180 Hz display with an aspect ratio of 8: 7.1. When the phone is folded, a second 6.45-inch display (with an aspect ratio of 12: 9) can be used on the outside, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold design. According to Huawei, both displays have a wide color gamut and an ultra-low reflection feature that exceeds the reflectance of Apple’s Pro Display XDR.
In a neat looking innovation, a new multi-dimensional hinge design allows for a “seamless” fold with no gap, using a water droplet-shaped cavity in which the fold resides inside. The double spiral structure is made of high-intensity steel that “eliminates the problem of the kink” and, according to Huawei, enables a 40% flatter panel design.
In terms of camera, the Mate X2 has an Ultra Vision Leica Quad setup that offers a “DSLR-level experience”, with a 50 megapixel sensor, a 50 megapixel wide angle lens, a 16 megapixel ultra wide angle lens and a 12 megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and an 8 megapixel “SuperZoom” camera with 10x optical zoom.
The camera module is in the thickest part of the phone, which is tapered. Despite the tapered design, the device folds evenly left and right so that the taper is not visible when closed. Most of the bulk of the handset is also on the right side of the phone for easy holding in portrait or landscape orientation.
The Mate X2 is powered by the Kirin 9000 5G chip, which was featured in the Huawei Mate 40 Pro last year. It is supported by 8 GB of RAM and a 4,400 mAh battery that can be quickly charged with up to 55 W. The device also supports the use of dual SIM 4G / 5G and comes with a leather case with a stand.
The Mate X2 will be launched in China on February 25th and will be available in 256GB or 512GB storage for 17,999 yen (approx. $ 2,785 USD) and 18,999 yen (approx. 2,940 USD), respectively.
Given Huawei’s conflicts with the US government, it is unlikely that the Mate X2 will be available in the US. Either way, the Mate X2 will boot with no support for Google’s apps or services, which will likely limit its appeal outside of China.
