HPE has expanded its block storage offerings to AWS and enhanced its Alletra MP block service. GreenLake, a cloud-like subscription service from HPE, now allows for the management of block storage in hybrid cloud environments, both on-premise and on AWS. Alletra MP is a modular and scalable storage product that can support both block and file workloads, depending on the chosen operating system.
Jim O’Dorisio, senior vice president and general manager of HPE Storage, emphasizes that HPE offers a transformative platform-based approach to hybrid cloud management and data storage, contrasting with competitors like Dell and its APEX cloud-like service. Dell introduced APEX Block Storage for Azure last year, already having support for AWS and local operations. GreenLake supports the on-premises Microsoft Azure Stack HCI offering and is likely to offer a block storage solution for Azure as well.
The GreenLake Block Storage on Alletra MP service now has the capacity to scale up to 5.6PB of NVMe SSD capacity with up to 16 JBOF shelves, double the previous capacity. The service includes support for 8-24 SSDs per enclosure, with the ability to upgrade drives and controller nodes incrementally.
Alletra MP also features three-site replication for enhanced data protection, along with compatibility with the Zerto Cyber Resilience Vault for additional data security. Alan Harper, corporate technology director at HPE 3PAR customer Shawbrook Bank Limited, praises HPE GreenLake for Block Storage for its data availability and scalability benefits.
Customers can seamlessly migrate data from legacy HPE storage arrays to GreenLake for Block Storage Alletra MP using the GreenLake Data Services Cloud Console, without disruption or complex planning. Alletra MP now supports HPE Infosight AIOps for cross-analysis, allowing for proactive identification and mitigation of performance issues.
HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition now supports Alletra MP and SimpliVity Gen 11 HCI offerings. The availability of HPE GreenLake Block Storage for AWS will begin in late May 2024, while HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition with options of HPE Alletra MP or HPE SimpliVity Gen11 will be available in July.
