Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is enhancing its block storage and hardware capabilities within the Alletra MP Storage platform, which supports block, object, and file storage and is managed through GreenLake. Alletra now has the ability to scale up to 5.6 petabytes of NVMe capacity by adding more JBOF shelves. Additionally, HPE has introduced a subscription service called Timeless program for Alletra MP driver updates.
In addition to the upgrades to Alletra, HPE is also releasing a new version of its HPE GreenLake Block Storage and introducing GreenLake Block Storage for AWS for software-defined hybrid cloud storage. This latest version of GreenLake Block Storage offers improvements in capacity and flexibility, according to expert Steve McDowell.
One significant development is HPE’s disaggregated approach to block storage software, allowing it to run on hardware beyond HPE’s own storage platform. This approach offers flexibility for users to expand or scale without being limited to a single platform. This level of disaggregation is not common among HPE’s competitors and allows for options such as moving block storage to clouds or adding and updating new controllers as needed.
HPE is refining its Alletra platform to simplify its storage offerings and increase overall capacity. With the ability to add more storage shelves and double the total capacity, Alletra is geared towards scalable, higher-capacity storage important for AI workloads. Additionally, Alletra MP is now integrated with Zerto Cyber Resilience Vault and features cross-functional analytics for optimized storage and virtual machine management.
HPE is also introducing the Timeless program, focusing on hardware upgrades for Alletra MP customers using block storage. This program offers driver updates and will be available in Q3 2024. The ability to update hardware in place is becoming increasingly important for storage providers, as it can help prevent storage migration costs and complexities.
Furthermore, HPE is extending its block storage software to AWS with the launch of HPE GreenLake Block Storage for AWS. This software-defined storage aims to provide a unified hybrid storage management solution for customers looking to leverage the agility, flexibility, and scale of cloud providers without introducing additional silos. This extension to AWS also offers a use case for cyber resiliency by allowing customers to replicate data to AWS and use their choice of backup and recovery software.
Overall, HPE’s upgrades and expansions in block storage and hybrid cloud storage solutions demonstrate a commitment to providing customers with scalable, flexible, and efficient storage options while staying ahead of industry trends and addressing customer needs for simplicity and resilience in their storage solutions. These developments position HPE as a competitive player in the storage and cloud storage market.
